ACT ONE
SCENE 1
OWEN enters upstage centre. He is carrying a tackle box and a rifle. He is dressed for a weekend at the lake, donning a straw cowboy hat.
OWEN: Hello country life, you son of a bitch!
LEE: (offstage) Owen?!
OWEN: What?
LEE: (offstage) Can you give me a hand with this stuff?
OWEN: Yeah, be right there!
He sets the tackle box on the counter and begins to speak to himself as if he is narrating a story.
And so, Jesse and Frank had outrun the posse once again. Theyâd be safe here⊠(moves downstage quickly and hides behind the couch, pokes his head up) for the time beinâ. (moves slowly right, still crouched down) No, it wasnât an easy life stayinâ one step ahead of the law. Never knowing what danger lay behind the next bedroom door.
He throws open the bedroom door and points the rifle inside, making shooting sounds with his mouth. OWEN stops, still staring into the bedroom.
Oh, sorry, folks. My mistake. (moves downstage in front of the couch) Yep, an ordinary man woulda cracked under this kinda pressure. But these werenât no ordinary men. No sir. These were the James boys. Jesse, the young one⊠cool and calm, with a certain boyish charm. And Frank, the older brotherâŠ
LEE: (offstage) Owen!
OWEN: The obnoxious one. (notices the deer head on the wall right, tips his hat) Morninâ, maâam. (moves left towards the screen door) Jesse may have been mean, but he always had a kind word for a pretty gal.
OWEN exits. LEE enters upstage centre. He is carrying two fishing rods, a tackle box, a bag of groceries, a suitcase, and he has a pair of binoculars around his neck.
LEE: Dammit, Owen, what the hell are you doing in here? (moves to the kitchen area and looks around) Owen?!
When there is no answer, LEE struggles to put the bag of groceries on the counter. The tackle b...
