In Brazilian Portuguese, there are at least three different ways to ask somebody’s name: Qual é o seu nome? and Como é o seu nome? in informal contexts, and Como o senhor (a senhora) se chama? in a formal context.

In Brazil, tu and você are the subject pronouns used to address someone; the pronoun você is the most commonly used. Tu is used to address the interlocutor in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and Belém. Both você and tu can be used interchangeably. Although, in this book you will be exposed to the pronoun tu and its verb conjugations, in the dialogues and exercises emphasis will be on the pronoun você.
