Dit is het huis van de krokodil.
De bootjes kapseizen hier,
De tongen verdrogen hier.
De bomen sturen de zon
Langs dodelijke oevers.
In mijn borst bevindt zich een vlieg.
In mijn stem bevindt zich een steen.
Het mes is hopeloos verdwaald
In een echo van geweerschoten.
Onderzoek naar tederheid
Zal niet aan vragen raken,
Maar aan kaken en klauwen
Die als schaduwen van ons bewustzijn
De oevers bewonen.

This is the house of the crocodile.
The little boats capsize here,
The tongues parch here.
The trees direct the sun
Past deadly shores.
In my chest there is a fly.
In my voice there is a stone.
The knife is hopelessly lost
In an echo of gunfire.
Research into tenderness
Will not strike upon questions,
But on jaws and claws
That, like shadows of our conscience,
Inhabit the shores.

Van poƫzie als compromis,
Winkelbezoek of duistere mythe.
Ik nam een taxi
Naar het waterloopkundig laboratorium
En bekeek de proefopstelling.
āHebt u nog gedacht
Aan de heer Attilio Bertolucci?ā
Vroeg ik de ingenieur.
āEn aan het feit
Dat zijn familie ooit verhuisde
Van de kuststreek naar het binnenland?ā
Ik zag dat de proefopstelling
Was voorzien van enkele poppetjes
Met gezichten naar het westen.
āZijn familie ging immers precies
De andere kant op dan hier het geval is,ā
Zei ik zo aardig mogelijk.
De ingenieur begon
Te overleggen met de fotograaf
Die de poppetjes had neergezet.
Ze glimlachten allebei
Terwijl ze naar de proefopstelling keken.
Het water stond stil.
āWij vragen ons af,ā zei de ingenieur,
āWat het effect is van het omkeren
Van die poppetjes.
Los daarvan: voor ons
Is het eenvoudigweg logischer wanneer ze
Met de stroming mee kijken.ā
Hij bukte zich en draaide aan twee kranen.
De fotograaf zei: āIk maak een beetje storm.
Die dingen daar zijn trouwens de peilnaalden.ā
