Cabinet Greenhouse

TRADITIONALLY, a greenhouse is a building, not a cabinet, but then again, most greenhouses can’t fit on a deck, porch, or patio either. That’s one advantage that makes this cabinet version a great addition to any gardener’s collection of must-haves. Like any greenhouse, this space-saving version will extend the growing season, and it can also serve as the perfect outdoor vacation spot for your indoor houseplants during more balmy temperatures.

Although the cabinet greenhouse is a snap to build, it does require a little math. (That’s because lumber material may vary in thickness and not exactly match the expected actual dimensions. But don't worry: these instructions come with a handy formula when it comes time to make the doors, so no matter what you choose for lumber, you’ll have the right measurements.

Note: when filled, the cabinet is heavy and quite stable, but anchoring it to a wall is still a good precautionary measure, especially with young children about.

Like some of the projects in this book, we’ve built the cabinet greenhouse from cedar. You could also choose to build yours from pressure-treated lumber.
