How quickly a dream constellation can become a trauma constellation

image
"For the past two years, I have been dreaming almost the same dream at least once a month:
I'm standing at the top of some kind of basement stairs. There is some light with me, but it only shines down to about 10 steps. I am terribly afraid and my white nightgown sticks to me full of sweat. Suddenly zombies come slowly up the stairs and I stand rooted to the spot for the first moment ..."
Derya is a 28 year old Turkish woman who is doing a dream constellation with me.
She can't remember any triggers for the dreams two years ago.
"... Then I realize that I have a sword in my hand and run towards the zombies so they can't get up there. I stab and realize with irritation that the sword does no damage – it is blunt. Full of panic, I grab the handle of the sword with both hands and use it like a club. In fact, over time, I can scare the zombies further and further back into the darkness – and then I wake up totally exhausted..."
A constellation of dreams and dream situations attempts to recreate the important point of a dream and, if possible, to go one step further towards a solution or resolution.
For this purpose, important elements of dream symbolism are briefly interpreted in order to have a clue about what it is roughly about.
In Derya's case, the dream symbols were as follows:
Stand at the top, basement, stairs / 10 steps, darkness, white nightgown, zombies, blunt sword, stand rooted to the spot, push back.
As mentioned, their meaning is looked up in keyword form in a dream symbol book (such as "10,000 Dreams" by Pamela Ball, for example).
Top: (especially here) the mind rules/has the power
Basement: the unconscious, the repressed
Staircase: connection between conscious and unconscious, mostly repressed feelings
Stages (down): approaching the past/repressed.
Number 10: New beginning (among others)
Darkness: place of secrets, the unknown, the shadow
Nightgown: relaxation, openness
White: innocence, purity
Zombies: split off part of the dreamer
Sword: justice, discernment, power
Blunt: poorly maintained, unusable
Rooted / rootedness: dealing with family / ancestors / origins
Repress: as in repressing, not wanting to admit.
If we briefly summarize and interpret the dream symbols, Derya's dream is about a split-off part of her – that is to say, an important memory that wants to come to light – that wants to be seen. Her mind tries to prevent this by all means, by suppressing these memories from the past with all its might.
What memories can they be?
The white nightgown indicates innocence and openness. This is often associated with childhood. The standing as if rooted to the spot suggests that it is about the family. The sword is blunt. The sword primarily represents power and justice. So a blunt sword could then be seen as a symbol of powerlessness and injustice.
Derya probably had something bad happen to her family when she was a child. The recurring dream prepares her for the fact that it is now time to look at this repressed memory.
When I ask Derya if she remembers anything like this from her childhood, she shakes her head in the negative.
That was to be expected.
Now the dream setup comes into play.
We are now recreating this exact situation with Derya choosing a representative for herself and three representatives for zombies.
I ask Derya to additionally choose a resource, because what was repressed – especially when it comes to powerlessness and was so strongly repressed – was probably a traumatic experience.
"My name translates as 'the ocean, the sea' – that's always helped me!" she says determinedly.
Upon review, the sea actually turns out to be a powerful resource with which we can dare to look at the subject.
Derya sets up the dream situation as follows:
Derya 1
D = Representative Derya, R = Resource / Sea, Z1 = Zombie 1, Z2 = Zombie 2, Z3 = Zombie 3.
L = Line-up leader, other abbreviations as above.
L: Derya, the ruler in your hand represents the blunt sword. How do you feel with the resource of the 'sea' behind you and the sword in your hand?
D: The sea gives me strength. I feel a little shaky and afraid of the zombies. The sword seems ridiculous to me.
L: I want to be very careful here. Take a good look at the three zombies. Which of the three is the least scary for you?
D: Mmmh ... The middle one [Zombie 2].
L: OK. Then we will only work with this one today and the others will remain passive at the back.
D: OK ...
L: Derya, Zombie 2 is coming towards you very slowly now. She (it is a woman representing the zombie) is most likely a memory of yours. She doesn't want to hurt you, but remembering can be very painful. Please say stop when it becomes too much for you.
Zombie 2 slowly walks towards Derya. Just before her Derya shouts Stop!
Derya 2
I ask Derya herself if she is willing to take the place of her representative in order to remember better. She agrees.
L: Feel your way in here. In front of you is a terrifying memory. How do you feel about it?
D: Phew ... It's different from the dream, but it feels similar. I am suspicious.
L (to Z2): How about you? Do you have anything to say?
Z2: I just want to go to her. There is something like anger in me, but not at her.
L: Derya, would you give the ruler behind you to the sea? Could you do that?
D: But then I don't have a weapon anymore ...
L: That's right. Can you trust the sea to swing the sword for you if you need help?
D (hesitates briefly, then in a firm voice): Yes!
L: OK. The zombie in front of you is most likely to split off a part from you. Could you imagine taking a very small step towards it? Just imagine that, OK?
D: OK.
L: What do you feel when you imagine that?
D: I am scared and my legs are shaking.
L: Where exactly in your body do you feel the fear?
D: In the ... solar plexus ... and on the forehead ...
L: OK. Is there an area in your body where it feels good right now?
D: Mmmh ... maybe ... my arms ...
L: Okay. Good. Now, shuttle between the solar plexus and the arms, the forehead and the arms. Feel there each time until you know exactly where it feels good and where it doesn't feel so good, OK? And breathe there, too.
Derya breathes, closes her eyes, opens them again. After a few minutes, she breathes calmly.
L: Good. Do you dare to take a small step? Feel your arms and breathe consciously.
D: Yes, I'll do it.
She takes a step towards the zombie and starts breathing heavily. Then she leans against the sea that had gone along.
L: OK, that was very good. Can you stand it? Can you feel your arms and the sea at your back?
D: Whew. Yes. I need time.
L: OK, take all the time you need.
We wait a few minutes.
D: OK. It works again.
L: Imagine that you should touch the zombie with your right hand. How do you feel about this idea?
D: Oh! Should I maybe still hug and cuddle the zombie, or what ...?
L: Honestly, it would be good if you...
