1Optimal contact pressure and optimal punch shape
The problem of optimization of the pressure distribution under a rigid punch that interacts without friction with an elastic medium filling the half-space is investigated with the help of classical calculus of variations [14, 64, 75, 116, 117]. The punch shape is accepted as a desirable design variable, and the root-mean-square deviation of the pressure appearing under the punch from a certain specified distribution plays the role of a minimized functional.
