the
instruments
needed
to
perform
an
occlusal
examination.
Shimstock
Foil
Function,
Features,
and
Practical
Tips
This
is
a
metal
foil
for
occlusal
testing
(thickness = 8
μ
m)
(Figure 3.2).
It
is
used
as
a
feeler
gauge
between
occluding
teeth
to
check
firmness
of
occlusal
contacts
in
comparison
with
those
on
the
selected
index
teeth.
When
you
fit
a
crown,
both
restoration
and
adjacent
teeth
should
hold
the
shimstock
firmly
in
intercuspal
position
(ICP).
Shimstock
can
also
be
used
to
ensure
the
accuracy
of
the
mounting
of
the
models.
This
can
be
checked
with
shimstock
such
that
the
intraoral
contacts
and
those
on
the
casts
coin-
cide
(Figure 3.3).

Anterior
teeth
often
have
light
shimstock
contacts
which
should
be
kept
light
after
restoration.
●
Shimstock
contacts
that
are
obviously
firmer
than
the
adjacent
teeth
usually
indicate
heavy
occlusal
loading.
