La messa in scena della sua ultima fatica sinfonica sarebbe forse l'occasione per fare ammenda degli errori, ma per un equivoco degno del più arguto Da Ponte, il Maestro cade vittima della devozione che lui stesso ha preteso, e la farsa si tinge di nero. La musica gioca un ruolo importante in molte delle opere di McEwan: a livello tematico, impegna e appassiona i suoi personaggi; come metodo formale, organizza e scandisce la sua scrittura. Ma nella piena commistione di partiture che è il libretto d'opera, McEwan, rinnovando la collaborazione con il compositore Michael Berkeley già avviata nel 1983 con l'oratorio Or Shall We Die?, esplora inedite possibilità espressive e dilata i confini del genere.
La trama di For You si inserisce nella vasta tradizione dell'opera buffa. Il celebre compositore e direttore d'orchestra Charles Frieth si appresta a dare nuovo lustro alla sua fama con la messa in scena della sua ultima creazione per orchestra, Demonic Aubade, e intanto non rinuncia ad ampliare la propria collezione di conquiste femminili seducendo, in cambio di un assolo di 32 battute, la giovane suonatrice di corno Joan. Charles e la moglie Antonia, molto malata e in attesa d'intervento, si trovano così coinvolti in un vivace ménage à six che include anche il medico di Antonia, Simon, il segretario di Charles, Robin, e la cameriera polacca, Maria, in un girotondo teso e a tratti comico che sfocia in un epilogo sorprendentemente cupo.
Si ritrovano dunque i temi da sempre cari a McEwan - l'ossessione sessuale, l'abuso del potere, i segreti, le bugie - calati in una lingua che, pur nella specifica forma concisa e cadenzata, sa esprimere tutta la forza della contemporaneità perché, come ha osservato di recente l'autore, «al giorno d'oggi un libretto deve avere un interesse intrinseco; non può essere solo la gruccia su cui appendere musica favolosa ed emozioni sublimi». ACT ONE

SCENE ONE

Lights down. The discordant sounds of the orchestra warming up. Violins on open strings, sudden runs on brass, woodwind etc. Slowly, this tangle begins to organize itself.

As it does so, CHARLES FRIETH comes upstage, baton in hand, towards the orchestra. He is an eminent composer in his mid- sixties, now rehearsing one of his own early works.

From the shadows he is joined by his secretary, ROBIN.

Lingering in the background is MARIA, the Frieths’ Polish house-keeper, an ungainly woman.

CHARLES

Don’t tell me.

I know that look of yours.

How long do I have them?

ROBIN

Only twenty minutes more. No longer,

or we have to pay them overtime.

Maestro, you know the rules are very strict.

CHARLES

Damn your rules man.

ROBIN

They are not my rules.

CHARLES

I said damn your rules.

He raises his baton.

This has been a long morning.

I’m tired and unhappy.

My temper is beginning to fray.

Let us try again, from letter D,

the tutti marked piano...

He mops his brow with a towel and lets it fall into Maria’s hands. He conducts, the music finds its course.

Tenderly...

Charles comes away, lost in thought, confiding while the music continues.

It does not touch me,

this music of my younger self,

when my name was unknown

and I lived on nothing but sex

and cigarettes and fast food,

when I was in love again every other week.

I hear it clearly, each intricate part,

I understand it, even admire it,

but I cannot feel its passion,

the longing, the sharp hunger,

the lust for newness of that young man.

It does not touch me now.

The usual table, Maestro?

The Minister of Culture is waiting.

A famous man with a rich wife—but

the dimmed perception, the expiring powers,

stamina, boldness, vigour wilting

under the weight of years.

The long descent to uselessness.

Every man’s fate, how banal it is,

and still it makes me angry, the clock

that’s beating me to extinction.

Stop! Enough! How can I make it stop?

He has returned to the orchestra.

And stop and stop and stop!

God fucking damn, I called a halt.

Am I standing here for nothing, waving my arms?

Through this, the orchestra comes to a slow, untidy halt. Silence.

I am not entirely deaf or stupid.

There was a note, a wrong note, a broken note,

an F sharp that should have been a G,

a hot needle in my ear.

It was the French horn. You, yes you, my dear.

Joan stands, holding her instrument. Anxiously, Robin comes forward.

ROBIN

Charles, she is a most promising player.

CHARLES

You, my dear. Yes, you.

JOAN

I did my best with what you wrote.

ROBIN

Not this. Please God, not this again—

CHARLES

Have you ever played that thing before?

JOAN

The note was high, almost beyond the instrument’s range.

ROBIN

Humiliation, then forgiveness, then seduction.

CHARLES

Do you know which end to blow through?

JOAN
