In questo volume Tommaso Munari ha raccolto 194 schede scritte da cento fra i piú famosi lettori che l'Einaudi ha avuto nel corso degli anni. Dai «padri fondatori» come Pavese, Bobbio e Mila, agli scrittori «organici» alla casa editrice come Natalia Ginzburg, Vittorini, Calvino, Fruttero e Lucentini, Manganelli, ai grandi studiosi che frequentavano le riunioni del mercoledí, come De Martino, Cantimori, Musatti, Argan, Contini, Caffè, Ripellino, Jesi, Segre e tanti altri, senza dimenticare il mitico Bobi Bazlen che proprio nell'attività di suggeritore editoriale ha fatto convergere tutto il suo straordinario percorso intellettuale. Sotto l'occhio clinico di questi signori passano capolavori della narrativa e della saggistica, ma anche libri di autori poco noti. Adesso è facile dire qual era l'opera geniale e quale no, ma i giudizi qui raccolti sono in presa diretta. Si poteva sbagliare, qualche volta si è sbagliato. Ma poter leggere i commenti «a caldo» su Broch, Propp, Eliade, Bataille, Braudel, Duras, Adorno, Benjamin, fino a Mordecai Richler e Mo Yan, crediamo possa stimolare molta curiosità e dare una certa emozione. E anche un bel divertimento, soprattutto quando scendono in campo i lettori-scrittori, che sono i primi a divertirsi. Come Calvino che inventa una filastrocca su Purdy o Lucentini che, per stroncare un libro, scrive una scheda in forma di dialogo teatrale fra l'autore del libro in questione e un suo annoiatissimo lettore.
