Bereits einen Tag nach Beginn des "Unternehmens Barbarossa" setzen die "Ereignismeldungen UdSSR" ein, die fast täglich im Reichssicherheitshauptamt zusammengestellten Berichte über die Tätigkeit der Einsatzgruppen in der Sowjetunion. Sie sind die bedeutendste, durchlaufende Quellengruppe zum Ostkrieg und zugleich Dokumente des Grauens. Auf rund 3000 Schreibmaschinenseiten ist minutiös festgehalten, wer, wann, wo und auf wessen Befehl hin welche Vergeltungsaktionen durchführte, Partisanen tötete oder Juden und Kommunisten in Massenexekutionen erschoss. So ist etwa die Dokumentengrundlage für das Massaker von Babij Jar, der größten Mordaktion im Jahr 1941, hier zu finden.Auf der Grundlage der Forschungen eines hochkarätigen Spezialistenteams ediert und kommentiert der Band erstmals sämtliche Ereignismeldungen des Jahres 1941, versehen mit einer Einführung, Literaturverzeichnis, Verzeichnissen der Dienststellen und Einheiten etc. Jeder, der sich mit dem Ostkrieg, mit dem Holocaust und den Kriegsverbrechen beschäftigt, ist auf diese Dokumente angewiesen.
