ZERO-MEMORY SOURCE

A zero-memory system is one that can receive pulses as stimuli and respond to them in a well-defined manner. The response, however, must be immediate and no delay is possible. A delay would in effect constitute remembering which impulse came in, even if for a brief period of time, thereby implying memory. Unit record machines such as sorters, reproducers, and printers are such systems. In a sorter the machine reading a punched card senses a hole in that card, which is represented by an electrical impulse.
