Esta mirada a la cultura escrita colombiana del siglo XX, a través del famoso y longevo manual de historia de Henao y Arrubla, 1911, los Escolios a un texto implícito, publicados por Nicolás Gómez Dávila entre los sesenta y los noventa, y un cuento y tres novelas de Gabriel García Márquez, busca comparar la manera como estos textos construyen la narrativa del Uno y el Otro en las tradiciones de nuestro pasado. Se postula la tesis de que estos monumentos verbales mediatizan dos tendencias de la relación con la otredad: una que prolonga en el pasado siglo la jerarquía y relación vertical entre culturas defendidas en la Constitución Política de 1863, y otra que precede y anuncia el reconocimiento de la horizontalidad y equidad entre culturas postuladas en la Constitución Política de 1991.
