Este libro recorre distintos campos de la lingĂŒĂstica (fonologĂa, morfologĂa, sintaxis, semĂĄntica) en busca de las principales caracterĂsticas que hacen que los idiomas sean mĂĄs simples o mĂĄs complejos. Luego procura medir dichas caracterĂsticas, a travĂ©s de indicadores tales como el nĂșmero de sonidos, la extensiĂłn promedio de los enunciados o la frecuencia con la que se repiten las palabras. Tales medidas son a su vez comparadas entre sĂ, a fin de detectar posibles «efectos de compensaciĂłn» que indiquen, por ejemplo, si un idioma que tiene palabras mĂĄs largas tiende por otro lado a usar oraciones mĂĄs cortas. En todo este recorrido, el autor introduce una serie de conceptos tomados de la lingĂŒĂstica cuantitativa, es decir, del estudio del lenguaje a travĂ©s de mĂ©todos estadĂsticos. Para ello hace un uso extensivo del Atlas Mundial de Estructuras LingĂŒĂsticas (WALS), que es probablemente la base de datos mĂĄs completa sobre caracterĂsticas de los idiomas a nivel internacional. TambiĂ©n relaciona sus resultados con teorĂas elaboradas por diferentes corrientes del pensamiento lingĂŒĂstico, que hacen referencia a factores de tipo biolĂłgico, funcional, histĂłrico y geogrĂĄfico.
