Das Ende der DDR ermöglichte eine öffentliche Diskussion bisheriger Tabus. "Weiße Flecken" der Geschichtsschreibung wurden offengelegt, so auch die jahrzehntelang beschwiegenen Verhaftungen der sowjetischen Besatzungsmacht. Betroffene und Angehörige meldeten sich zu Wort, zahlreiche Erinnerungszeichen wurden seit 1989/90 in Ostdeutschland gesetzt. Erinnern und Gedenken "vor Ort" waren und sind gekennzeichnet durch die Aushandlung konkurrierender Geschichtsbilder. Sie sind eine Form von eigenwilligem Handeln im regionalen Kontext. Gleichzeitig stellt das Aufeinanderfolgen von nationalsozialistischer Herrschaft und sowjetischer Besatzung das Gedenken vor besondere Herausforderungen. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele und unter Einbeziehung des heutigen Wissensstandes zum Nationalsozialismus sowie zur sowjetischen Besatzung diskutiert der Band verschiedene erinnerungskulturelle Praktiken. Darüber hinaus gibt er Interessierten Impulse zum selbständigen Forschen vor Ort.
