Bilbao’s upmarket hotels are mostly in the Ensanche and Abandoibarra areas; some are monuments of contemporary architecture in their own right. If you want somewhere with more character, you will want to be in the Casco Viejo where there are more budget choices but you may have to put up with more street noise (and parking may be a problem). Given the small size of the city, any of these three areas will make a suitable base for sightseeing.
Another option is to stay on the coast and commute into the city for sightseeing. Book ahead for peak periods when Spain is on holiday – especially Easter Week and the month of August. Spanish hotels are classified by a star rating system which goes by facilities and says nothing about charm or the quality of service. The tourist information office website (www.bilbaoturismo.net) has details of hotels, hostels, guesthouses (traditionally called pensiones) and apartments. The official accommodation reservation service can be contacted on tel: 946 941 212.
