Sunday 21st February [1858]
Dear Lady Holland
I do beg & entreat of you to try & find out how my Brinsley is going on,& how he is! – he is the worst correspondent in the world, – & every now & then I get a panic about him.1 At any time Turner the banker could pay a special messenger to go over to him, & let me refund.
That is why I write! you can really relieve my mind of a slight tab of trouble! You will be thinking of public matters. – Lord Palmerston’s resignation was not, I think, expected of his followers: – & they say, – – (but òh! Lord how often have we heard that echo!) – that he will not come in again.2
Lord Derby went to the Queen – (after she had begged Palmerston to reconsider the matter, & he had said that his resignation had been maturely considered & was definitive) – and a Derby Ministry is to be formed of which nothing is yet settled – tho’ much is rumoured. “Thesiger to be Lord Chancellor”, – “Dizzy to go to Constantinople”, &c.3 Gladstone & S. Herbert are being wooed, like coy maidens as they are: but are revêche4 & recalcitrant.5
The scene of Friday night was most curious. The H. of Commons crowded so that really there were hardly seats for the members: Peers on all the cross benches below the gallery: – the gallery itself full of Diplomats among whom Chreptowitch’s white head shone like the chaste moon:6 – the most eager attention was shewn by these foreigners to the debate.
The house itself gave stormy attention to each successive speaker. Milner Gibson7 was vehemently cheered, – & several rounds of cheering after he had concluded. That graceless Prodigal Son of Politics, Sir Robt Peel, was cheered, & laughed at: – Palmerston listening to the re...
