Knowing Him by Name is a book of 336 short devotional readings based on the names and references to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The names of God reveal details about his character. A person knowing these names, and the context in which they occur in Scripture, will be able to better understand the nature of God. The aim of every Christian should be to increase our knowledge of God. In turn, what we know about God should help transform us into his likeness as we apply these insights to our lives.

The Sevenfold Spirit

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness. (Revelation 1:4, 5—NIV alternative reading)

The number seven indicates perfection and so the sevenfold Spirit is available in his completeness to the seven Churches to whom John was writing. The sevenfold Spirit is also before the throne, which means he is in the presence of God.

Here God the Father is named as him who is, and who was, and who is to come, with Jesus named as the faithful witness.

The Godhead was therefore giving a blessing of grace and peace to the seven churches in Asia. Five of the Churches are called to repent, but to all seven there was a promise to those who overcame.

Reflection: We too have been given “very great and precious promises” (2 Peter 1:4), but remember the promises of the “sevenfold Spirit” are to those who overcome.
