Black Theatre Selected Bibliography

The following Selected Bibliography concentrates on Black and Asian British Theatre, together with Caribbean Theatre, which often crosses over between Britain and the Caribbean, addressing themes and issues of shared concern or heritage. Also included, here, are shorter sections on African-American and African Theatres, with particular attention given to selecting plays that have been produced in Britain in the last fifteen years.
Occasionally a playscript has been included by a white playwright, because of its significance in black theatre development, and in those instances the playwright’s name is marked with an asterisk. Otherwise, playscripts listed are by black playwrights. No distinction has been made between black and white writers of secondary material listed here.
Joan-Ann Maynard’s contribution to the compilation of the playscripts lists is gratefully acknowledged.
A. Ruth Tompsett
