About This Book

Road Vehicle Dynamics: Fundamentals and Modeling with MATLABÂŽ, Second Edition combines coverage of vehicle dynamics concepts with MATLAB v9.4 programming routines and results, along with examples and numerous chapter exercises. Improved and updated, the revised text offers new coverage of active safety systems, rear wheel steering, race car suspension systems, airsprings, four-wheel drive, mechatronics, and other topics. Based on the lead author's extensive lectures, classes, and research activities, this unique text provides readers with insights into the computer-based modeling of automobiles and other ground vehicles. Instructor resources, including problem solutions, are available from the publisher.

1.1 Units and Quantities
1.1.1 SI System
The International System of Units1 is the world’s most widely used system of measurement. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) laid it out in ISO 31 and ISO 1000. The modern SI system will be used throughout this textbook. Common quantities, their variations, as well as conversion tables may be found in [3]. The most important physical quantities, their standardized units, as well as some old but still important units are collected in Table 1.1. The unit rad can be replaced by the numeral 1 in calculations. With the exception of hours (1 h = 3 600 s) and minutes (1 min = 60 s), decimal multiples and submultiples will form additional legal units.
