Aim of the activity

• To explore how day and night occur.

Take a torch and a spherical object (an apple, orange or tennis ball would do) into a darkish room. Shine the torch on the ball and slowly rotate it on the spot to show someone how day turns to night.

Think about and discuss

	Does everyone have night-time at the same time? When it is midday in England, what time is it in Australia?
	Do you have any questions of your own about day and night?

Earth, Sun, Moon: phases of the Moon

Aim of the activity

• To explore how the phases of the moon occur.

Ask someone why the Moon seems to be different shapes at different times.

Take a torch and a spherical object (an apple, orange or tennis ball would do) into a darkish room. Hold the ball at arm’s length, just above head height, and ask someone to shine the torch on the ball. Now shuffle your feet so you turn slowly anti-clockwise, keeping the torch directed at the ball as it moves around with you.

Now swap over so that you hold the torch and someone else holds the ball.

Think about and discuss

	How long is one lunar (moon) cycle?
	What other questions do you have about the moon?
