Note:
During the eighteenth century Russian musical life was dominated by Italian composers and musicians. Best known as an operatic composer and a long-serving maestro di cappella at St Markā€™s Cathedral in Venice, Baldassare Galuppi (1706ā€“1785) served as kapellmeister in St Petersburg between 1765 and 1768. During this time he exerted a strong and beneficial influence on the musical development of the young choristers of the Court Kapella, in particular on Dmitry Bortnyansky. This anthem, written for Easter, is one of fifteen compositions for the Orthodox Church which he is known to have completed during his stay in St Petersburg.

Giuseppe Sarti (1729ā€“1802) was another of the many Italian composers to work at the Russian Court, where he held the post of kapellmeister from 1784ā€“6 and again from 1793ā€“1801. This anthem for Easter is one of his many works written in the Italian style for the Russian Orthodox Church.
