About This Book

"You know when a song gets stuck in your head? Round and round... over and over. I've got that right now... only it's not a piece of music... it's not a tune... it's a phrase: home is where the heart is... home is where the heart is." A coastline erodes, a house falls into the sea. A mysterious brother and sister arrive looking for answers. Marnie clings to her camera, taking photographs of strangers and places. She has come to say goodbye to a life she never knew whilst her brother Linus is keen to make a fresh start. But when they find Simon and daughter Kelly, reeling in the wake of tragedy, all four lives are to become inextricably linked under the weight of the past.

A hospital corridor.
SIMON and KELLY Lowe sit on plastic chairs.
SIMON has a lot of blood on his shirt. He looks a little beaten up. Two of his fingers have been splinted and a cut on his face has steri-strips holding it together. He has been in a car accident. He can’t look at KELLY.
KELLY dressed in a hurry; she threw on some tracky-bottoms and a jumper when she heard of the accident.
Nothing but the sound of fluorescent tubes.
KELLY stands and exits.
SIMON barely moves. He stares at the floor.
Long silence.
KELLY returns, two plastic cups of water in her hands.
KELLY: (Offers SIMON a water.)
SIMON: (Doesn’t look up.)
KELLY: Water.
SIMON: (Takes it without looking – he doesn’t drink, he just holds it.)
KELLY: (Sits.)
Silence.
KELLY: If she needs anything … any blood or … or anything … (Beat.) Have you let them know that?
SIMON: (Silence.)
KELLY: Do they know that?
SIMON: I’m sure that they do.
Silence.
KELLY: Dad …?
SIMON: I’m sorry but I can’t …
KELLY: That’s completely … yes … no … fine.
SIMON: Just don’t say anything.
KELLY: Yes … course … it’s fine … it’s fine.
Silence.

A cheap B&B.
A small handbasin to one side. Two single beds. Tea and coffee making facilities.
LINUS is at the basin wanting to brush his teeth, but there is no water in the taps.
MARNIE is sat on one of the beds, eating biscuits, a bottle of coke between her knees. A large, professional-looking digital camera is sat on the bed next to her.
LINUS turns the taps. A loud groaning of pipes.
LINUS: Nothing.
MARNIE: Brush them dry.
LINUS: How is that good for the gums?
MARNIE: You’ll survive one night.
LINUS: (Brushes his teeth.)
MARNIE: Does the kettle work?
LINUS: No water for my teeth … no water for your kettle.
MARNIE: Go down and ask.
LINUS: Tomorrow.
MARNIE: Go down and talk to the lady.
LINUS: Tomorrow. (Spits in the basin.) This is no good.
MARNIE: (Offers him her coke.)
LINUS: (Takes it and rinses his mouth out.)
MARNIE: (Takes a picture of him with her camera.)
LINUS: Brushing my teeth? Why do you want a picture of me brushing my teeth?
MARNIE: (Shrugs.)
LINUS: Let me see. (Takes the camera and starts cycling through the photos on the tiny screen on the back.)
MARNIE: What do you think? Do you like them?
LINUS: You took these today?
MARNIE: What do you think?
LINUS: Do you want criticism or praise?
MARNIE: Praise.
LINUS: The composition is very strong.
MARNIE: Thank you.
LINUS: The light … the contrast of the light and shadow … and these …
MARNIE: Which ones?
LINUS: … these … the old woman … the way she stands … the way she stands … you capture something very …
MARNIE: Very …?
LINUS: I don’t know. Very ordinary … very moving … I guess.
MARNIE: You like them?
LINUS: Yes.
MARNIE: Good.
LINUS: You know I like your pictures.
MARNIE: Yes.
LINUS: You’ve got talent.
MARNIE: Talent is common. You need skill.
LINUS: You have that too.
MARNIE: Thanks. (Beat.) Now the criticism, please.
LINUS: I want to lie down.
MARNIE: Criticism.
LINUS: I’m tired.
MARNIE: You have some though?
LINUS: You know I do.
MARNIE: Say it.
LINUS: It’s not constructive.
MARNIE: Say it.
LINUS: When did you take these?
MARNIE: Which ones?
LINUS: The old woman.
MARNIE: This afternoon.
LINUS: When?
MARNIE: You were looking for road signs … you were looking for street names. You told me to wait.
LINUS: These at the bus-stop …
MARNIE: Yeah?
LINUS: You ask their permission?
MARNIE: No.
LINUS: People don’t want to be photographed at a bus-...
