About This Book
A young man lives alone with his mother and his beloved dog in a house in a small village overlooking the fjord. The dog has run off and gone missing. This has never happened before... In The Dead Dogs, lives are shockingly disrupted by an event that changes the direction of their future. Fosse's drama explores life lived in unexpected ways, with a sense of otherness pervading the present and colouring the characters' relationships.

Afternoon
A living-room with a large window, two doors
THE YOUNG MAN lies on a bench with his face to the wall and THE MOTHER enters, walks over to the window
THE MOTHER
But itâs quite a nice day
THE MOTHER looks at THE YOUNG MAN
You could go for a walk and look for the dog
just as well as
lying around here
waiting for him to come back
of his own
THE YOUNG MAN stays where he is
Heâll come back soon
youâll see
so donât worry
Short pause
Dogs do things like that
they go for walks
now and then
Itâs nothing to worry about
THE YOUNG MAN still lies there without moving
But if it matters that much
you should go and look for him
then
Short pause
Youâre a grown man
even if itâs hard to believe
so
sit up now
and go and look for the dog
If itâs that important
Pause. THE YOUNG MAN turns, looks at THE MOTHER
Heâll come back
youâll see
Nothing to worry about
Heâs just gone for a walk
THE YOUNG MAN
He just ran
Itâs not like him
THE MOTHER
interrupts him
Just go and look for your dog
then
if itâs that important
Short pause
It doesnât help anyone
just lying there
But we have to go to the shop
We need coffee
Perhaps you can go to the shop
short pause
and then you can
yes look for the dog
at the same time
THE YOUNG MAN sits up on the bench, nods
Yes why donât you do that
THE YOUNG MAN
But he never runs away
I was only going to walk him
as I always do
and he ran away
I called him
but he didnât stop
just kept running
He never does that
THE MOTHER
Donât be silly
Dogs do that
They take a walk now and then
Short pause
THE YOUNG MAN
Yes but
THE MOTHER
No thatâs enough
Itâs nothing to worry about
and if you do
why donât you go...
