ACT I
SCENE 1
NIGERIA â ABUJA
(JACKIE IS IN HER FORTIES)
A hotel room in Abuja. A full glass of wine on the table. JACKIE is standing by the bed looking flushed. Her father JONATHAN is standing before her.
JONATHAN: Before we can proceed with this meeting, I would like to pray for you and to welcome you to Nigeria.
JACKIE: (Reluctant.) Ok.
JONATHAN: Sit please.
JACKIE sits down nervously on the edge of the bed whilst JONATHAN plucks a Bible from his bag and starts to dance, whirl and chant.
JONATHAN: O God Almighty, O God Almighty, O God Almighty, we welcome Jackie Kay to Nigeria. Thank you, O God Almighty, for bringing her here safely. She has crossed the waters. She has landed on African soil for the very first time. O God Almighty!
JACKIE watches amazed as JONATHAN does some fancy footwork. He is whirling like a dervish. He takes his shoes off and kneels on the floor.
JONATHAN: God has given you this talent. You are a writer. You have written books. You have been blessed. God already knows about you. Donât think for a second that God hasnât been waiting for you. Now all you must do is receive Christ and your talent will become even bigger and you will become more focused. Amen. From this moment on you are protected. God protects the talented. Amen. You can walk through fire, you wonât get burnt. You can swim in dangerous waters, you wonât drown. Donât even bother with your hotel safe. God is looking out for you.
I see in your eyes that you are not yet able to put your full trust in God. And yet you know that would make me very happy. At every reading you do, you could take the message of the Lord.
JACKIE: (Jokes.) Itâs usually just twelve people at a reading in â somewhere like â Milton Keynes Central Library on a rainy Thursday night.
JONATHAN doesnât get the joke.
JONATHAN: Twelve people is a start! Think of all the people you could bring to the Lord if you got ready to receive Christ! If animal blood can cleanse sins under the Old Law, how much more can the blood of Jesus Christ cleanse us and prepare us for glory?
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Open your heart to him. Repent of your sins. Allow me to purify and cleanse you.
JACKIE: The fact that I was born out of wedlock is not my sin.
JACKIE is crying now.
JONATHAN: I see your tears. That is good! You are repentant. You are moved by my sermon.
JACKIE looks at her watch.
JONATHAN: God has intended us to meet after I became a born-again Christian. We should deliberate on the issue of new birth. Your talents are even greater than mine. You are going to be very big and God is going to help you. All you have to do is receive Christ and everything will blossom from there. Your whole career.
I want you to receive Christ. Why wonât you give me that assurance?
JACKIE: (Gentle.) I would like you to respect my beliefs as I respect yours. Iâm not comfortable with being born again.
JONATHAN: On the way here, I met a man who is a nonbeliever. He was such a blow to me. His very presence pulled my spirits down. I had to get away from him.
JACKIE picks up the glass of wine and slugs it down in one go.
JONATHAN: Follow the six steps to salvation. Acknowledge, Repent, Confess, Forsake, Believe, Receive.
JACKIE: You certainly know your Bible.
JONATHAN suddenly sits down. He looks shattered.
JONATHAN: I thank you for your patience. And now the time is yours. I will eat with you. I will have a drink ...
