UNIT
ONE

David and Solomon

In recent years, GPS-equipped navigation devices have become quite common. Whether walking or driving, one need never get lost with a friendly, computer-generated voice guiding every turn.
Sometimes, of course, the traveller does make a wrong turn, and thatā€™s when these gadgets become even more valuable. Within moments, the voice offers reassurance that it is ā€œrecalculating,ā€ and soon a new route to the destination is in place. A moment of apprehension over a wrong turn is alleviated by the assurance that all has been made right once again.
Most Christians find great joy in knowing that God has a plan for their lives. Their great joy and sense of purpose can become clouded, however, with the realization that theyā€™ve made a terrible mistake or embarked upon a series of bad decisions, taking them far from Godā€™s plans. You might even have students in your classroom struggling with this issue today.
There is great comfort to be found in the knowledge that in spite of our failures and shortcomings, Godā€™s will is not thwarted. When we turn to Him, He can restore us to the purpose He has for us.
During the next eight weeks, your class will explore the biblical account of two men who experienced this in profound ways. The names of David and Solomon are easily recognized as central characters in Scripture, even by many unbelievers.
David was Godā€™s unlikely choice to be king. He was a person of faith and tenacity, well-established even in his younger years. He slew a giant, fled the murderous intentions of Saul, ascended to Israelā€™s throne, and led the nation to many victories. Yet he also fell to the temptation of sins many Christians could scarcely imagine. However, in the end, David is remembered as a man after Godā€™s own heart, and Israel enjoyed Godā€™s blessings.
Solomon, too, enjoyed the Lordā€™s blessings, in the form of wisdom and riches beyond comprehension. He built a temple for the Lord that stood as a testimony to the nations and a wonder of the ancient world. Still, Solomon later became entangled in unwise and sinful marriages with pagan women. Yet Godā€™s blessings, and His plan for His people ultimately endured.
As you go through this unit, pray for your students. Ask God to speak to any who struggle with their own sins of the past. Use these lessons as reminders that God has a plan for His people. That plan will come to pass as we turn from sin and trust Him to work in ways beyond our imagination.

[The Lord] made David their king. God testified concerning him: ā€œI have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to doā€ (NIV).

At the end of this study, students will be able to:
1.Acknowledge that God chooses certain individuals for specific tasks according to His will.
2.Recognize the need for trust in God.

Introducing the Study
It is said that God will equip the person He calls. In other words, He will not call a person to a task without giving that person the tools to succeed in fulfilling it. When individuals are called to accomplish something for God, they must remember it is His work, not theirs. God wants it not only to come to pass, but He wants it done in a fashion that brings Him glory in the end. This weekā€™s study examines this truth in the life of David, the most important king in Israelā€™s history.
King James Version
New International Version
1 Samuel 16:10. Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 1 Samuel 16:10. Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, ā€œThe LORD has not chosen these.ā€
11. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 11. So he asked Jesse, ā€œAre these all the sons you have?ā€ ā€œThere is still the youngest,ā€ Jesse answered. ā€œHe is tending the sheep.ā€ Samuel said, ā€œSend for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.ā€
12. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 12. So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, ā€œRise and anoint him; this is the one.ā€
13. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. 13. So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
17:48. And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 17:48. As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
49. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 49. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the...
