Socrate fu condannato a morte nel 399 a.C. con l'accusa di essere empio e corruttore di giovani, in realtà per motivi politici, da un tribunale composto da cinquecento giurati estratti a sorte su una lista di seimila cittadini ateniesi. La morte fu votata con una maggioranza (280 contro 220) assai più ristretta di quanto lasciassero prevedere gli umori antisocratici della città; e Socrate non volle mutare la pena, pur potendolo, con l'esilio, per non sottrarsi all'imperio delle leggi della sua città, e per lasciare agli ateniesi un segno durevole dell'opera sua.
