About This Book

Functional Pavements is a collection of papers presented at the 6th Chinese-European Workshop (CEW) on Functional Pavement Design (Nanjing, China, October 18-21, 2020). The focus of the CEW series is on field tests, laboratory test methods and advanced analysis techniques, and cover analysis, material development and production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. The main areas covered by the book include:

ā€¢ Asphalt binders for flexible pavements
ā€¢ Asphalt mixture evaluation and performance
ā€¢ Pavement construction and maintenance
ā€¢ Pavement Surface Properties and Vehicle Interaction
ā€¢ Cementitious materials for rigid pavements
ā€¢ Pavement geotechnics and environment

Functional Pavements aims at contributing to the establishment of a new generation of pavement design methodologies in which rational mechanics principles, advanced constitutive models and advanced material characterization techniques shall constitute the backbone of the design process. The book will be much of interest to professionals, academics and practitioners in pavement engineering and related disciplines as it should assist them in providing improved road pavement infrastructure to their stakeholders.

ABSTRACT: With the advancement of construction industry, innovative materials are being used to be aesthetically pleasing in cities. Resin-based surfacing/paving is an innovative technique used for variety of pavement applications like footpath, parking lots, and bus stops etc. Before the construction of pavements, laboratory studies are important to provide evidence about the expecting physico-mechanical response of designed materials. Therefore, this study was conducted to measure the physical and mechanical properties of a resin-based surfacing/paving material. For this purpose, aggregates and an epoxy resin manufactured by Jiangsu SinoRoad Transportation Science and Technology Co., Ltd. were used. The aggregates have two size (1-2mm and 2-3mm) and two-part cold mix epoxy resin was selected to be used as binder. Results of dust and moisture content have shown that due to the limited amount of dust and moisture, aggregates can form strong bonds with the epoxy binder. Mohā€™s hardness test also has shown that aggregates had high strength on hardness scale. Additionally, tensile strength, lap-shear strength, and butt joint strength tests depicted that the epoxy binder had high strength with short working (pot) life. When tested under low temperature (-10ĀŗC), results indicated that still the epoxy had enough elastic properties to resist cracks. Finally, combination of epoxy binder and aggregates for resin-based surfacing/paving applications hold improved properties and can be used for multiple applications. SinoRoad Transportation Science and Technology Co., Ltd. tested materials have comparable properties as other commercial products.

1 Introduction

Epoxy paved colored aggregates have been used frequently to improve the aesthetic of pedestrian bridges, footpaths, running tracks, car parking, bus lanes, and road junctions. The resultant pavements have an extremely hard-wearing surface, capable to withstand both high and low temperatures with various range, do not fade in UV sunlight, and resistant to oil or petrol spillage (McCormack 2020). Before the application of such types of pavements, it is important to determine the physical and mechanical properties of both epoxy and aggregates. Mechanical properties were determined using the laboratory experiments to measure either material can obtain the desired properties or not. Epoxy resins are thermosetting polymers having good performance, the processing is easy, and have two epoxy groups per molecule (Lokensgard 2013; Mano 1991). For the reason of having high reactivity, adhesive properties, rigidity, chemical resistance, and fluid nature before application make it suitable to be applicable in several mechanical applications (Deng et al. 2008; Hsieh et al. 2010). Additionally, the resin has also been used for a thin overlay of asphalt pavement on steel bridges (Zhang et al. 2019). The purpose of this study is to determine the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy and aggregate separately to ensure the quality of the material provided manufactured by Jiangsu SinoRoad Transportation Science and Technology Co., Ltd.

2 Material and Methods

2.1 Materials

Although, aggregates are available in different sizes and colors. According to the project specification, the epoxy bonded method was adopted with a layer thickness of 3mm. Reddish color aggregates of size 1-2mm and 2-3mm were used. Whereas, epoxy acts as a binding agent between the base and aggregate. For this study cold mix two-part (A & B) Jiangsu SinoRoad Transportation Science and Technology Co., Ltd. epoxy was used. The polymer matrix part A is epoxy resin and part B is hardener with a mixing ratio of 10:3. Part A is a viscous liquid, whereas, Part B viscosity is less as compared to Part A. Figure 1 shows the cross-sectional details of resin-based surfacing.
