About This Book

"Tim Price's play about two hackers is tumultuous, energetic and ultimately touching in its vision of a global network of young people dedicated to challenging the status quo." Guardian A sixteen-year-old London schoolboy and an eighteen-year-old recluse in Shetland meet online, pick a fight with the FBI and change the world forever. This brave and challenging play gets behind the code with the original Anonymous members, offering an anarchic retelling of the birth of hacktivism. Teh Internet is Serious Business is a fictional account of the true story of Anonymous and LulzSec, the collective swarm who took on the most powerful capitalist forces from their bedrooms. The play received its world premiere at the Royal Court, London, in September 2014. This new Modern Classics edition features an introduction by Hamish Pirie.

This is a fictional account inspired by a true story. Certain elements have been changed or altered for dramatic purposes. In some cases fictitious characters and incidents have been added to the plot, and the words are those imagined by the author. The play should not be understood as a factual account.
Notes for performance
This play should be performed with no screens.
The character Anonymous can be played by any number of people, in any number of ways. Anonymous is a hivemind, a collective of individuals. Anonymous should be on stage at all times, moving and thinking in a swarm. Who says which Anonymous lines should be discovered by the director and cast in rehearsals. For Operations Chanology and Payback an unexpected swell in numbers would help storytelling.
Dialogue
/Indicates when the next line should begin.
– Indicates interruption by either a character or thought.
A space between lines represents the length of pause.
A line that ends with no full stop indicates no break between the character’s lines.
Bold dialogue indicates that this line should be spoken chorally. This means every single person on stage says this line at their own choosing, not in unison.
