About This Book

Perhaps the primary field of "Our Something" is Consciousness. In action which resembles particle to particle encounter...Consciousness enables each unit of itself forward. Consciousness has an "immediacy" we don't understand. But...by considering it, we can have clearer thoughts about cause and effect, the separable nature of things, freewill, and fate. Time and distance is...also...carpet-like and connected, yet separable. *** Before entering Robot City, we ought to study Consciousness...before the human "I" slips away.

As Time Goes By
Alfred John Dalrymple
As Time Goes By
Just above Namche
(before an unpainted house)
Alfred sits at a weathered wooden table, in a patio...this overlooking and within a high-mountain valley which stretches away and downward. A river, hidden below, shows briefly a few miles distant as the valley disappears southward.
A wood railing helps enclose the task at hand, as Alfred reaches to papers on the table.
From behind him, there enters a clear, youthful, female voice.
He turns his head.
Female (near the building)-
I see you have company. I'm here for the porter job. Shall I leave...return later?
***
An older female nearer to the table has entered the yard from the adjoining one to the west. She is on the Namche trail and has come up from that town.
Older female-
They say you're mister Dalrymple. I'm Barb Stanton, here because you want a book brought down to the internet café...and put into Kindle.
I'm with the Texas expedition...stuck in Namche a few days.
Will you ask the lady, inside, how many rupees for a cup of tea?
(she comes to the table and sits)
Alfred-
She doesn't sell tea to passersby. This is her home.
Barb Stanton-
I need tea.
Alfred (to the girl near the house)-
Are you Sherpa...and at least eighteen? Wait on The bench, dear. I'll be through in a minute.
***
Again facing the woman at the table, he offers his hand, but she doesn't take it.
Barb (looks toward his papers)-
I assume you have the book on disc. How many pages is it?
Alfred-
It's an essay. Seventy pages. Yes, it is on a disc. Barb-
I'll take it down...and put it in for two hundred dollars.
Alfred-
That's more than I want to pay...Barbara.
Barb-
That's Barb! At the university I don't do these tasks...others do them for me. I can use the extra money.
Alfred-
So can I. Thanks for coming up. See that small building...right there, just as the trail cuts downward? She'll sell you a cup of tea for about ten rupees.
***
Without a word or nod, Barb begins to depart in the direction of the building he referred to, but after a few steps she turns and speaks.
Barb-
I think you'll find that the Nepali won't know how to do it. They'll charge you five bucks, and you'll be awarded a boobie prize in Stockholm.
Alfred-
For me...that would be a step upward.
***
After Barb departs he sees that the girl near the house is sitting, looking downward, and is holding her head.
Alfred-
Do I know you, dear? What's your name?
Girl (approaching)-
Calling me "dear" would seem more appropriate if you were older.
(she comes to him)
My Sherpa name is Jangmu. You can call me that, or Nell. My western name is Nell Barton.
Alfred (offers his hand, and she takes it)-
Is it all right if I feel it?
Nell-
Feel what?
Alfred-
The "dear" part.
Nell-
Why do you want a female porter rather than male..Alfred?
Alf-
Call me Alf, please! I would choose a girl porter only if I liked being with her. I never did have one. And why not? I'm a man. I...
Nell-
I'm not a prostitute.
Alf-
Nell, you sound sixteen...in the tone of your voice. I see you're not...but of course that's for you to say.
Nell..
That's right!
Alf-
You have Sherpa features...in the softness, and gentle curves. You're the prettiest one I ever saw. Nell...I study you because I've seen those eyes before...in New Hampshire. No?
(shakes his head)
Maybe I saw you in Namche a few years ago.
Nell-
My mother is Nepali...my father is from New Hampshire.
Alf-
Nah! It can't be what I'm thinking! Are you...? No, of course not! But...one day in Concord, near the Capitol building...I saw a pretty girl sitting, looking downward, seeming to be in despair. I asked" "Can I help?"
Nell-
That was you?
Alf-
You said you were all right. So I went away. What was wrong?
Nell-
After a few years at school...I suddenly wanted to be here, and was having thoughts of a happy childhood.
(she shuffles her feet)
Can I sit?
Alf (pushes aside the papers)-
Would you like tea?
Nell (sits)-
Yes, thanks. What are the papers? In Namche, when they said a man wanted a female porter, they smiled, and winked. Then I heard your name. I read a couple of your books. Alfred John Dalrymple. Isn't using your full name a bit pompous?
Alf-
As a kid I attended at least a dozen schools. I used my first name and my last...with the two d's together. And I was usually asked to say it two or three times.
Nell-
Why not just AI Dalrymple? But...now I'm being insensitive.
Alf-
When I write a book I use my full name. The world can take it or leave it! Screw it, Nell!
Nell-
My full name is Nyellie Trululu Barton Jangmu Sherpa.
Alf-
It sounds like an ancient Scottish name, that probably never was...but someone dreamed it. The Nyellie Trululu part.
Nell-
Yes...I've thought that...about the Scottish dream. My nutty grandpa gave me the name...and died the same day. Then he went back to the highlands... probably.
Alf-
I have Scottish roots.
(reaches for his papers)
I'm wondering if you read my last book, about Consciousness being the basis of existence.
Nell-
Yes, I did.
Alf-
Did you like it?
Nell-
Yes. And I love your novels...particularly when they happen here. They're very romantic.
Alf-
I need to finish m...
