Après la conquête du Milanais en septembre 1499, de nombreux Français, impliqués dans les campagnes militaires et faisant partie de la suite de Louis XII ou chargés d'un office dans l'administration du Duché, séjournent en Lombardie occupée. Au-delà des répercussions politiques et administratives, cette présence étrangère semble avoir joué un impact sur la production artistique locale.
Le présent ouvrage, qui procède d'un colloque organisé à l'Université de Genève les 30 et 31 mars 2012, se focalise sur l'activité de ces commanditaires français, de Charles II d'Amboise aux rois Louis XII et François Ier, mais aussi des francophiles, comme Bernardino Lopez de Carvajal, Sebastiano Ferrero ou Gian Giacomo Trivulzio.
En abordant différents domaines tels que l'architecture, la sculpture, l'enluminure et la peinture, notamment Léonard de Vinci et son cercle, le présent volume vise à comprendre la portée de leurs commandes et leur influence sur les choix iconographiques et techniques de certains artistes, par exemple Bramantino, Zenale et Bernardino de Conti. Il cherche aussi à définir leur rôle dans la présence d'artistes d'Italie septentrionale en France et à s'interroger sur l'ascendant du modèle lombard sur les artistes français.
