House Wren

Troglodytes aedon
ORDER: Passeriformes | FAMILY: Troglodytidae
This small, shy bird’s cheerful song can be heard in backyards throughout North America, particularly during its mating season. Its song differs regionally from the north to the west, where a unique tone and rhythm define each variation. The adult House Wren’s unassuming plumage is brown on its back with blackish barring on its wings and tail; its underside is a lighter, grayish brown. The House Wren’s beak is long and narrow, and its tail is short and often cocked. A hole burrowed into a tree by a woodpecker is one of its favorite nesting sites. This feisty bird also enjoys the comfort of a birdhouse so much that it is known to usurp the human-made houses of other birds. The enterprising and opportunistic House Wren also nests in such places as mailboxes and flowerpots.
