About This Book

This revised edition of the Franciscan Daily Office SSF updates basic texts in line with Common Worship. The opus dei is the prayer life of the Church. By the use of forms of prayer prescribed during the day, Christians of all traditions connect with the prayer life of the Universal Church. To members of religious orders, these daily 'offices' form the structure of the day. The patterns of this daily prayer embrace the three key elements of praise, intercession and engagement with Scripture. The Society of Saint Francis have been fervent advocates of the use of these forms of daily prayer for lay people, priests and religious people. Indeed the Church of England drew very heavily on the work pioneered by the Franciscans when they produced their own Daily Prayer part of the series of books following the publication of Common Worship (Church House, 2005). But this book has a lot of additional 'Franciscan' material and as such has long maintained a strong and devoted audience. Now this revised edition brings the basic texts into line with Common Worship by using more contemporary but dignified language and the Common Worship translation of the Psalms.

Morning Prayer continues with the HYMN and/or THE OPENING PRAYER.
B:
O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Blessèd are you, Lord God of our salvation,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As once you ransomed your people from Egypt
and led them to freedom in the promised land,
so now you have delivered us from the dominion of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of your risen Son.
May we, the first fruits of your new creation,
rejoice in this new day you have made,
and praise you for your mighty acts,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
Blessèd be God for ever.
The following is said:
In Ordinary Time:
God is the creator and redeemer of all.
O come, let us worship.
or, in Easter:
Alleluia. Christ is risen indeed.
O come, let us worship. Alleluia.
THE OPENING CANTICLE
THE EASTER ANTHEMS (62a), number 62b, page 523, or Psalm 100, page 392
1Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us, *
so let us celebrate the feast,
2Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness *
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
3Christ once raised from the dead dies no more; *
death has no more dominion over him.
4In dying, he died to sin once for all; *
in living, he lives to God.
5See yourselves, therefore, as dead to sin *
and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.
6Christ has been raised from the dead; *
the first fruits of those who sleep.
7For since by one man came death, *
by another has come also the resurrection of the dead,
8For as in Adam all die, *
even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Glory . . .

now and for ever. Amen.
