Introduction

I have, for a long time, wanted to produce a collection of monologues from my plays because there are a lot and I know they work well for young performers (and probably older ones as well!). When I came to write this introduction I wanted to say how many there were, so I counted them… twenty-nine. I decided thirty was a much better figure, and am glad because I have now added one from my musical Wacky Soap, which offers an interesting contrast to most of the others!

I have granted requests for my monologues to be used in compilations of other such books so, it seemed I wasn’t the only one to think that they were worthy of such a collection, but my previous publisher (Zinc) never went with the idea.

The onset of COVID-19 and the advent of socially distanced learning led to many requests from teachers for monologues. I was constantly suggesting Chequered Flags to Chequered Futures (in which every other scene is a potent monologue) and it brought the idea to the forefront of my mind again. When I suggested the idea to George Spender (Salamander Street) he reacted with a… “Yes! Do it now!” … response. So I did!

In so doing, I also discovered a number of ideal duologues and suggested that I do a book of them too… which was also met with a similarly positive response! Thanks, George!

Young people as performers and age of the role

I suggest that ALL of these monologues are possible for young people to perform despite the implied age of the person they are playing. Without exception, all the plays from which these monologues derive, were written for young people to perform. There are some that are specifically teenage characters, but I would not restrict any prospective performers to those. I have seen incredible young performers doing all of the speeches in this volume. The age of the performer should be no barrier.

Gender & racial background

What I have said regarding age refers equally to gender and racial background. I have, throughout my lifetime as a Youth Theatre director, blind cast without realising that term or that I’m doing it. I have always cast people with reference to availability, enthusiasm and commitment. The verbatim monologues in particular are suitable for gender and racially blind casting because the actor is simply putting their silhouette over the words and should never aim for impersonation.

A note about performance in verbatim/documentary plays

I wrote this paragraph when introducing some of my early verbatim plays and I feel it’s appropriate to repeat it here:

It must, at all times, be remembered when reading or performing this play (these monologues), that the events portrayed are as close to the truth...
