Fouché, el genio tenebroso es una obra biográfica, pero desde la particular perspectiva de Stefan Zweig, sobre la vida del político francés Joseph Fouché. Este político fue importante a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX, es decir, en el periodo convulso de la revolución francesa, el imperio napoleónico y la restauración monárquica en Francia. En esta obra es palpable la obsesión del autor por los rasgos psicológicos de los personajes, influido por el psicoanálisis, pues obvia fechas y detalles y tan solo se centra en la personalidad del personaje retratado tratando de buscar en su carácter las causas de los acontecimientos históricos. Incluso, en el Prefacio Zweig transmite su indiferencia por el personaje en sí, sino que lo que le fascina es su carácter inmoral y camaleónico ante las circunstancias que le hace un modelo político a seguir, pero sabiendo pasar desapercibido, pues fue un político que ha quedado a la sombra de personajes tan reconocidos como Robespierre o Napoleón. Esto podría tener un trasfondo político por haber sido escrita en los años veinte, momento en el que surge los fascismos y abusos de poder. Este texto no solo es importante por su contenido a pesar de su modalidad subjetiva sino por su uso de los recursos del lenguaje de forma erudita que le dotan de un estilo vivo y dramático.
