About This Book
Khalil Gibran’s The Garden of the Prophet is the second leg of his journey to infinity. The former was The Prophet and there was going to be a third entitled The Death of the Prophet but Gibran himself died before his prophet did.
In the trilogy, albeit incomplete, Gibran wanted to tell us the story of existence as he saw it through his all-seeing vision, with man’s life and reincarnation at its heart. It looks to the reader as if the Grand Spirit of the universe touched his consciousness and therefore he knew the road to eternity.
We enjoy reading The Garden of the Prophet more than The Prophet, not because the first reveals more of the unknown infinite than the latter, but because it takes us even closer to another dawn; to life’s second day, and we rejoice in envisaging an encompassing vastness never revealed to the human mind before. Moreover, we trace an overwhelming peace that is all soul.

"يا غشاوة الضباب، يا شقيقتي، يا شقيقة من ضباب،
أنا وأنت واحدٌ الآن.
لم أعد ذاتاً.
سقطت الجدران.
وتكسرت الأغلال؛
أصعد إليك ضباباً،
لنطوف فوق أديم البحر معاً حتى اليوم الثاني في الحياة.
حين ينزّلك الفجر، قطراتِ ندىً في رياض،
وينزلني طفلاً على صدر امرأة."
ورغم أنها لم تكن أغنيتي، إلا أنها وصلت لقلبي،
وللحظة أقامت على شفتَي.
"يا غشاوة الضباب، يا شقيقتي، رغم أن ما مضى قد مضى، أجدني في سلام.
كفاني أني غنيت لمن ولدتهم الأرحام.
ورغم أن الغناء لم يكن غنائي،
إلا أنه من أعمق ما في قلبي من شوق.
لكن هوة صمت انداحت بيننا أبت أن توجزَها
ولم أقدر أنا أن أتجاوزها.
"يا غشاوة الضباب، يا شقيقة لا تعرف الموت،
غنيت لأبنائي الصغار ألحان الأزل،
ولقد أصغَوا، والدهشة على وجوههم؛
ربما نسوا الأغنية غداً،
وأنا لا أعرف إلى من ستحمل الريحُ الأغنية.
"يا غشاوة الضباب، يا شقيقتي، وأولَ من ولدته أمي،
يداي لاتزالان قابضتين على البذور الخضرِ التي أوصيتِني بنثرها،
وشفتاي لاتزالان مطبِقتين على الأغنية التي أوصيتِني بأن أغني؛
لا أحمل لك ثماراً، ولا أصداء
يداي كانتا كفيفتين، وشفتاي عازفتين عن الكلام.
"يا غشاوة الضباب، يا شقيقتي، أحببت الدنيا كثيراً، وأحبتني الدنيا أيضاً،
كل ابتساماتي كانت على ثغرها، وكل دموعها في مقلتَيْ.
وينزلني طفلاً على صدر امرأة،
ولسوف نتذكر.
"يا غشاوة الضباب، يا شقيقتي، أعود قلباً يصغي في أعماقه،
مثلَ قلبك،
شوقاً يخفِق بلا غاية مثلَ شوقك،
هجساً بعد لم يلتئم، مثلَ هجسك.
آب المصطفى، المختار الحبيب وضحى نهاره، إلى ربوع ميلاده في تشرين، شهر التذكر والحنين.
وإذ دنت سفينته من المرفأ وقف على مقدمها، وبحارته حوله، تهزج في قلبه نواقيس العودة.
وتكلم، والبحر بعض من نبرته، وقال:
"انظروا، هنا ولدت. هنا جاشت الأرض بي، أغنية ولغزاً؛ أغنية للسماء، لغزاً للأرض؛ وماذا بين ال...
