Chapter 1: Living on purpose
Are you one of those fortunate people who wake up each day with a sense of purpose? If so, you’re no doubt enjoying a high level of wellbeing and performance. Purpose is one of the most powerful motivators in life.
However, many of us have been too busy to clarify our own purpose lately. It’s easy to lose sight of what matters when we’re constantly responding to multiple competing pressures. If that’s you, you’re not alone.
What is purpose and why does it matter?
Having a strong sense of purpose means accomplishing something important to you while living in alignment with your values and using your favourite strengths and skills. When you have purpose in your work, it gets rid of the tension between ‘work’ and ‘life’. Instead of being separate, work should be a vital and fulfilling part of life.
Alignment between your individual purpose and how you actually spend your time is a powerful contributor to wellbeing. Living in conflict with what matters can be associated with stress, depression and poor health.
Interestingly, having a clear sense of purpose might also be good for your financial health. Research conducted over nine years and published in 2016 found that among the 7,000 participants, those with a higher sense of purpose had a higher income and net worth. They were also more likely to increase their income and net worth over the following years.
It makes sense that knowing your purpose changes your life. Deep down, we all have a fundamental drive to find meaning in your life. Happily, once you know what it is, your sense of purpose becomes much easier to fulfill.
Using your core values to make confident decisions
Let’s start with your core values. Are you clear on what you most want in your own life? Do you use those values to guide your daily decisions? Living in alignment with your values becomes infinitely easier once you’ve spelt out what they are.
