Mental Health: Anxiety Disorder
Overview
Experiencing occasional anxiety is a normal part of life (Mayo clinic). There are many beneficial aspects of healthy fear and anxiety in our daily lives. Fear gives us strength to face immediate danger and motivates us to achieve; anxiety helps us to prepare for future danger and react to situations with stronger understanding (Harriman 2015). Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia, specific phobias, and separation anxiety disorder) (Mayo Clinic).
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US, affecting 40 million adults age eighteen and older. People with this condition are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events (ADAA).
