Partiendo de la superación de una perspectiva espontánea y, en el mejor de los casos, funcional, que actualmente abunda en la creación de la forma objetual, esta investigación considera que el objeto es un constructo que revela las estructuras cognitivas del grupo que lo produce, y que la forma es un hecho social de convivencia. Así, este estudio se estructura en cuatro partes constitutivas: la primera de ellas plantea diversas hipótesis acerca del origen de la forma objetual, no excluyentes entre sí, sino más bien complementarias y en muchos casos afines. Las otras tres partes pretenden analizar tres campos de la forma objetual: el de percepción (gestáltica), el de significación (semiótica) y el de valoración (estética), que la fundan como organización perceptiva, significativa y valorativa; campos que si bien son analizados aisladamente, se integran en la forma configurando una unidad a partir de principios holísticos y sistémicos.
