Parts of a Typical Module
Overview | This section presents the parts of a typical learning group module and describes the learning function each part serves. ā¢ Getting Started ā¢ Review of Concepts and Tools ā¢ End-of-Chapter āReflectionsā ā¢ āTake Fiveā Reflections ā¢ Application Exercise ā¢ Wrap Up ā¢ Exceptions |
Getting Started | In this segment the leader welcomes the participants, does a short warmup exercise, and reviews the agenda for the module. This segment gets learners connected to each other and to the learning process that is about to take place. |
Review of Concepts and Tools | The leader or a designated participant presents a review of the concepts and tools in the assigned reading, using either the overheads that come with this learning package or their own presentation materials. Participants should already have been exposed to this new information by reading it on their ownābut in case they havenāt, this segment presents the information simply and quickly. If they have done the reading, this review helps firm up their understanding. |
End-of-Chapter āReflectionsā | In this segment the group discusses the end-of-chapter reflection questions. This prompts them to reflect on what they have just read or heard in the review. |
āTake Fiveā Reflections | Here the group discusses the āTake Fiveā reflection questions that are included throughout each chapter. This discussion prompts each participant to consider how the concepts and tools presented in the text can be applied to their own situation. |
Application Exercise | In this segment, learning group participants practice applying some of the concepts and tools they have learned, and then reflect on this application exercise. |
NOTE: Application exercises are part of the agenda in scheduling options 1 and 2, but not in option 3. | |
Wrap Up | In the wrap up participants receive their take-home work assignment for the next module and reflect on this learning session. |
Exception: Module One | The agenda for Learning Module One is different from the typical agenda in the following ways and for the following reasons: ā¢ There is no reading assignment for Module One. It is an introductory module designed to explain what the learning group process will be, how learners will participate and what they will be responsible for, and to gain buy-in to this process. Because of this, the module does not include end of chapter or ātake fiveā reflections, or an application exercise. ā¢ Instead, this module includes several discussions and exercises specific to Module One. One of these is the āWhatās on your mind?ā discussion in which participants air their concerns so they can resolve issues and deal with any bad feelings. ā¢ The module also has an in-depth āGetting Startedā segment designed to introduce the whole learning group sequence, as well as this specific module. This segment includes welcomes by the learning group leader and the company management and introductions by participants. |
Exception: Module Eight | Like Module One, Module Eight is different from the typical agenda because it wraps up the entire learning group sequence. It includes the following: ā¢ A review of concepts and tools from Modules One through Eight. ā¢ Reflections on what participants have learned throughout the learning group sequence. ā¢ A discussion of how participants can apply what theyāve learned and learn more about this topic. ā¢ A reflection on the entire learning group sequence and an ending celebration. |
