SHOPPING CART

I remember the day

you grab boxes of Fruit Loops Lucky Charms Alpha-Bits

saying this is what you want for breakfast

meanie me

make you put them back except for the Fruit Loops

I put some Shreddies oatmeal other whole wheat grains in the cart

where your brother is already sitting

enjoying the ride down the aisles

we load up on fresh beef chicken salmon vegetables

y’all want Pizza Pops I say no

at the check out

strategically placed

are the chocolate bars gum candy

I say yes to at least one or two

it’s what Moms do

as I get to the checkout I notice a young woman in the line

behind me

sparse order she needs

a salad a can of soup a baguette

her order

reminds me of what I have already got

you

I let you pick a pop for the ride home

some chocolate

even though I say you are only supposed to enjoy one

once a week at most never two

today more than 20 years later I am at the check out in the grocery

again few items in my cart

it is only me now

there is another young woman in front of me

with a sparse order again of mostly healthy food

in these moments

I am reminded of...
