About This Book

A woman runs into her former abuser and is surprised by the power he still holds over her. In an attempt to uncover the truth of what really happened between them, she recalls her adolescent self: a synchronized swimmer struggling to make sense of the world around her. Humorous and dark, Mortified explores sex, shame, and transformation and how we reckon with the traumatic experiences that have shaped us.

Act 1

Scene 1

A Girl is alone in what appears to be the bottom of a decrepit old pool. Coach Cindy watches her from above, on a diving board.
Coach Cindy: A girl in the body of a woman. Stuck between this world and another. Longing to be human again.
A Woman appears.
Girl: Do you have smokes?
Woman: No.
Girl: Yeah you do. Gimme one.
Woman: No.
Girl: Why not?
Woman: I quit.
Girl: Liar.
Beat.
So why are you here? You obviously have something you want to say.
Woman: I don’t.
Girl: Then what do you want?
Woman: Hush!
Girl: You’re creeping me out.
Woman: I need to think.
Girl: Thinking’s boring. Why can’t we conversate?
Woman: That’s not a word.
Girl: Yeah it is.
Woman: Conversate”?
Beat.
Girl: Fine. Don’t mind me. I’ll just be over here . . . rotting.
Woman: I ran into your boyfriend today.
Girl: Ty!? You ran into Ty? Where?
Woman: In the food court. At the mall. Paul went to get us smoothies and I turned around and . . . there he was.
Girl: Did he see you?
Woman: Yeah. I looked away but it was too late. He came over and, and he—hugged me.
Girl: Uh huh. And?
Woman: I hugged him back.
Girl: What did he smell like?
Woman: The same.
Girl: Like hair wax?
Woman: I guess.
Girl: And pot?
Woman: Probably.
Girl: And the inside of a cardboard box?
Woman: Yeah.
Girl: It’s his hair. He never washes it.
Woman: His hair’s all gone.
Girl: Gone?
Woman: He’s bald.
Girl: Oh. Did you guys talk about me?
Woman: No.
Girl: Why not?
Woman: I’m not opening that up again. I’m not going to talk to Ty about you.
The Girl grabs at the Woman.
Hey! Get off of me—what are you doing?
Girl: Stop ignoring me.
The Girl grabs at the Woman again.
Woman: Stop! Get your hand out of my—
Girl: Don’t! You’re pulling my hair. Ow, ow, / ow, ow!
Woman: Don’t be so dramatic.
Girl: You suck.
Woman: You suck.
Girl: You suck.
Woman: Stop behaving like a—
Girl: I know you are but what am I?
Woman: Oh, okay, I get it. This is the part / where you—
Girl: I know you are but / what am I?
Woman: Now you’re just being—
Girl: I know you are but what / am I?
Woman: Aaaargh!
The Woman exits, leaving the Girl behind.
Coach Cindy: A girl. In the body of a woman. Longing to be human again.
Transition. The Girl looks up at a shadow passing overhead.

Scene 2

A Boy enters. It is nighttime. Moonlight reflects off the water. We can hear the sound of the waves lapping against the shore.
Boy: You won’t be coming back?
Girl: No.
Boy: Never?
Coach Cindy: Her family ...
