Pipeline Support Design
Part 1: Design Criteria
Basic knowledge of structural analysis and design is enough to solve the most complicated type of pipe support structure.
Civil-structural engineers know how difficult it is to come up with a safe, economical design to support the piping loads, especially when final piping drawings are not available. Civil-structural engineers are the last to get all the information but the first group required to produce construction drawings to meet the schedules. Civil engineers must be able to reach into their bag of tricks and dream up a structure to meet all these needs in a hurry.
It is the object of this article to provide the civil-structural engineer with approximate methods that can be used to design almost any type of pipe support structure. Also included are some suggested methods for developing design criteria as an emergency aid for those suffering from a lack of information on design loads.
The entire subject on pipe supports includes: (1) Design Criteria, (2) Design Procedures, and (3) Construction Details for specific types. Only the Design Criteria will be presented in Part 1 under the following headings: (A) Classification of types, (B) Selection of a type, and (C) Design loads. Simplified design procedures and construction details for single, double, and multiple column pipe supports are presented in Part 2.
Classification of Types
Even though an infinite number of types can be evolved by various combinations of such variables as the number of columns, number of tiers, type of construction, and so on, the majority of common types can be classified as follows:
Class 1 Pipe Supports. Single Column Pipe Supports
Class 2 Pipe Supports. Double Column Pipe Supports
Class 3 Pipe Supports. Multiple Columns And Other Types
Various arrangements included under each ty...
