Chapter 3
THE METHOD
I have developed four questions that act as guidelines based on the 5 pillars of professional planning which is reinforced as a sound and effective method of planning by the best training schools in the area of project management. Through the outline, you will notice some specifications which will ultimately offer you a structured approach through a thorough inquiry that is necessary to obtain real and genuine answers. Let’s take a look at how professional managers undertake major projects and the preparation that they incorporate into the process. I think you will quickly see the many benefits of taking the time to prepare and the guarantee of success they represent.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
According to project management experts, there are five pillars to follow during the preparation of any project.
1. Establish clear objectives;
2. Recognize gains and shortcomings;
3. Check all possible options;
4. Develop an action plan with a structured time line;
5. Constantly re-assess progress.
Like legs of a table, if one of these pillars is left out, the result will be an insurmountable sense of instability and an inability to undertake the project with confidence. The establishment of clearly defined objectives is paramount. In project management jargon, a goal should be SMART, PURE and FAIR. To flesh these terms out more, one could also use words like “intelligent, honest and fair”, but consider this list of words too: specific, measurable, accessible, realistic, within a specified time, positive, useful, ethical, completely clear, faithfully written, accepted, challenging, law-abiding and environmentally friendly.
SMART guides us to the intelligible characteristics. In this part of the goal, the objectives must be very specific and unambiguous. You have to establish your goal so that another professional could come in and understand it in such a manner where the need to clarify is done away with. It must be measurable, both in terms of quantity and quality, allowing you to follow and map your progress. The accessibility of a goal is subjective and unique to each of us. What is important to remember is that the goal must be accessible for you. If you do not believe in it, you will not reach it. It is not about your confidence in your ability to reach the goal; rather it is in your ability to imagine the goal. If your brain can dream of the goal, simply by visualizing it in your mind, it becomes achievable. Realism does not in fact depend on your real and personal abilities, but rather on the characteristic of being feasible. In seeing the goal come to fruition, it is crucial to have some sort of time line which will allow you a clear picture of your progress, and the ability to meet your deadlines. A goal without limits is easy prey for procrastination.
PURE refers to the propensity we have as humans to be attracted to the positive and to the good. It also refers to the characteristics that will ultimately facilitate motivation. An objective must be positive, linking with the two motivational types recognized by the brain — avoiding pain is not as powerful a goal as seeking pleasure is. The utility of the PURE lens is very important in terms of figuring out the “why” motivator. Indeed, why do it if it is completely useless? The utility of the goal will always keep motivation at its highest level. In the same vein, respecting the ethics of a goal is an essential compo...
