About This Book

This book takes a unique interdisciplinary look at the latest developments, advances, and trends in the interrelated areas of sustainable engineering, energy, and the environment, focusing on environmental engineering for renewable and green energy. It looks at new research and studies on a variety of topics in green nanotechnology, green processing and solar energy, sustainable energy policies, biofuels, fuel cells, and much more.

The first section of Sustainable Engineering, Energy, and the Environment: Challenges and Opportunities looks at myriad issues in sustainable energy, such as sustainable urbanism through space planning and residential building design, a method to convert vibrations from mechanical work into power, energy grid maintenance, mathematical modeling and time analysis of various mechanical activities, and more. Topics on sustainable energy include voltage systems for stand-alone nanogrids, new sources for biodiesel production, solar energy conversion, protection equipment for windmill towers, etc. The section on sustainable environment explores issues such as industrial water recycling, regeneration of spent-activated carbon in pharmaceutical production, smell mitigation and recovery of fuel from waste, the water footprint of agriculture, etc.

ABSTRACT

Urban areas keep on changing from time to time; and every change holds an opportunity for improved design, and anything that is not upgrading with time is in the state of decline. The ignorance towards interconnected, multidimensional, and interrelated perspectives of the design and planning of spaces has destabilized the eventual need of immoderate communal and environmental facilities in initiating urban sustainability intents. Answering to these flaws, this chapter used both qualitative and quantitative approaches and amalgamated various communal and environmental aspects to instruct the growth and progression of design and planning of spaces. The chapter aimed at triggering the improvement of the socio-economic and environmental health of urban areas.
At first, the chapter tries to examine and categorize neighborhood parks depending upon various parameters such as environmental, communal, urban fabric, land-use, land cover, greenness, site amenities and built spaces of the neighborhood park. In a later section of the chapter, the chapter assesses the current neighborhood park system to draw recommendations for planning and design of these spaces by keeping sensitive approach towards its social and built context. The chapter concludes with the design guidelines for triggering sustainable urbanism through space planning and design and encourages to design across the urban and natural gradient amplified multiple ecosystems that are intertwined together.

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Urban areas keep on changing from time to time; and every change holds an opportunity for improved design, and things that are not upgrading with time are in the condition of downswing. Over the last few years, the architects have retrieved the possibilities of urban plazas, neighborhood parks and other outdoor public areas to upgrade urban quality of life by overcoming the social and environmental ills of recent times. Entry to civic areas has been shown to enhance the quality of human lifestyle [1], facilitate social cohesion, harmony, and bonding amongst man and surrounding environment, and enrich mental health, physical health, and spiritual health of human beings [2]. These urban areas take an active part in protecting and promoting ecosystem, multifariousness, environmental functions, and other services in the urban areas [3].
In spite of continuous and frequent researches on neighborhood parks, there is a major disparity between understanding and knowledge. Most researchers do not consider the diversity in communal, ecological, and contextual aspects of these spaces; specially the features of communal urban fabric, vigorous requirements and choices of people living around. Researchers generally consider these spaces either as “parks” or as “green spaces,” neglecting diversity in the characteristics of the space and confluence of environmental and communal facilities available in the public spaces. These loopholes in the neighborhood parks indicate the requirement of actual investigation, which increases the concern of these integrated and composite urban components so that they can come up with initiating sustainable urbanism through design and planning of spaces.

1.2 SUSTAINABLE URBANISM

Sustainability is an interdisciplinary and integrative field for research that tends to amplify the social health, economic development, and ecosystems simultaneously. Despite the fact that accurate significance of sustainability is still a controversial affair, the multidimensional definition discusses about c...
