Dernier texte majeur en langue d'oc resté inédit, et unique manuscrit mathématique conservé écrit dans cette langue, l'Arithmétique composée par un auteur inconnu à Pamiers vers 1430 est pourtant destinée à occuper une place de choix dans l'histoire des mathématiques. On y trouve d'abord la première acceptation d'un nombre négatif, à savoir pour l'une des inconnues d'un système d'équations linéaires. L'auteur explique ensuite, lors de sa recherche d'approximations de racines carrées ou cubiques d'entiers, comment on peut construire une suite infinie de fractions rationnelles entre deux entiers voisins; ceci l'amène à se poser la question de la comparaison de deux ensembles infinis, celui des naturels et celui des fractions. Cet ouvrage intéressera non seulement les étudiants et les enseignants de mathématiques, mais aussi toute personne curieuse de suivre l'exposé fort clair d'un enseignant du XVe siècle initiant ses lecteurs aux applications commerciales des mathématiques tout en soumettant à leur réflexion quelques questions menant bien au-delà de l'enseignement conventionnel.
