Desde el retorno a la democracia Santiago se convirtiĆ³ en uno de los escenarios relevantes del cambio social como efecto de las polĆ­ticas de apertura econĆ³mica de una ciudad global a escala local, pasando de ser el "Santiago antiguo" antes del terremoto de 1985 a la zona de RenovaciĆ³n Urbana de principios del siglo XXI. En ese contexto surgen nuevas formas de habitar la ciudad que rompen los antiguos paradigmas de condiciĆ³n social de las antiguas generaciones de santiaguinos. Los nuevos productos habitacionales transforman la antigua imagen del "sueƱo de la casa propia" a la del departamento como un espacio funcional de las distintas etapas que la vida presenta en las personas. Sin embargo, detrĆ”s de las viviendas se visibilizan diferentes individuos y grupos sociales con historias de vida que reflejan a una nueva clase media, nuevos pobres urbanos, e incluso, viejas clases medias. En el libro se identifican nuevas tipologĆ­as de residentes que habitan la comuna de Santiago desde los aƱos 1990, analizando sus diversos objetivos en los espacios que la centralidad brinda. Se plantean asĆ­ los gentries, los transitorios urbanos, los decadentes y precarios urbanos como tipologĆ­as dinĆ”micas de habitantes, y no cerradas. Son primeras reflexiones sobre los sujetos sociales que disputan el centro de Santiago al menos hace mĆ”s de treinta aƱos. El centro se configura como una nueva forma de hĆ”bitat residencial para grupos sociales divergentes.
