Già, perché quell'io arde, brucia. «Brucia il cuore», che resta impotente nel vedere come alta l'idea di Storia vagheggiata grazie al mito della Resistenza abbia lasciato il campo alla nuova corruzione che non solo rende vano qualunque richiamo al sogno comune e trascorso di una diversa, più luminosa Politica, ma anche di una diversa, più autentica Religione. Di questo traumatico passaggio Pasolini intende, poeticamente, dare conto. Senza recedere di fronte a nulla. E utilizzando ogni tipo possibile di materiale argomentativo: metafisico, polemico-giornalistico, profetico, lirico, cronachistico, elegiaco, naturalistico, storico-saggistico.
