C'est un acquis en démographie que les indicateurs de la nuptialité évoluent avec l'amélioration des conditions de vie, l'urbanisation et l'élévation du niveau d'instruction. Or le Sud-Ouest du Burkina, en dépit de sa pauvreté, de sa ruralité et de son taux élevé d'analphabétisme, a des comportements démographiques dont les données statistiques avoisinent celles des régions où sont localisés les grands centres urbains. Ce constat paradoxal incite à élargir le champ de recherche sur les déterminants de la nuptialité. C'est dans cette optique que la compensation matrimoniale qui est une exigence nuptiale dans le Sud-Ouest a été explorée. L'approche de la démographie compréhensive s'enracine dans la théorie du changement et de la réponse. Elle va au-delà de la théorie de la transition démographique.
