El realismo científico es la visión de que el universo descrito por la ciencia es real independientemente de cómo puede ser interpretado. Dentro de la filosofía de la ciencia, este punto de vista es a menudo una respuesta a la pregunta "¿cómo se explica el éxito de la ciencia?" La discusión sobre el éxito de la ciencia en este contexto se centra principalmente en el estatus de las entidades inobservables de las que aparentemente hablan las teorías científicas. En general, los realistas científicos afirman que se pueden hacer afirmaciones válidas sobre lo inobservable (es decir, que tienen el mismo estatuto ontológico) que lo observable, en contraposición al instrumentalismo.
