Die durch F. hepatica und F. gigantica verursachte Fascioliasis ist eines der größten Probleme der öffentlichen Gesundheit in der Welt und in Ägypten. Epidemien von Fascioliasis haben viel Leid und wirtschaftliche Verluste verursacht. Die Diagnose der Fascioliasis basiert auf klinischen Befunden sowie auf Labortests. Die parasitologische Diagnose basiert auf dem Nachweis von Eiern im Stuhl, im Zwölffingerdarminhalt oder in der Galle. Die Eier können jedoch in sehr geringer Zahl und in unregelmäßigen Abständen vorhanden sein und sind daher schwer zu finden. Antigennachweistests sind für die Immundiagnose von größter Bedeutung, da der Nachweis zirkulierender Antigene auf eine aktive Infektion hinweisen kann. Darüber hinaus sollte der Koproantigen-Nachweis als nicht-invasiv bei Felduntersuchungen für Antigen-Nachweis-Assays angesehen werden; gereinigte Antikörper und Antigene werden benötigt.
